Holding the 6th Meeting of the Working Committee on Legal Affairs for the Eradication of Child Labour in Myanmar

The 6th meeting of the Working Committee on Legal Affairs for the Eradication of Child Labour in Myanmar was held in a hybrid format at the ground floor meeting hall of the Ministry of Legal Affairs at 10:00 a.m. this morning. The Deputy Minister and Deputy Attorney General of the Ministry of Legal Affairs, as well as the Chairman of the Working Committee on Legal Affairs for Eradication of Child Labour in Myanmar, Dr. Htain Lin Oo, attended and addressed the meeting.

The members of the Working Committee on Legal Affairs for the Eradication of Child Labour in Myanmar from Nay Pyi Taw attended the meeting personally; representatives of the Working Committee on Legal Affairs from the Region/ State Administration Council, representatives of the Yangon and Mandalay Development Committees, a representative of the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry, representatives of the Myanmar National Committee on Women and Myanmar Red Cross Society attended the meeting via online, respectively.

In delivering the opening speech, the Chairman of Working Committee on Legal Affairs for the Eradication of Child Labour in Myanmar addressed the facts that early employment of children in the workplace may lead to the loss of their career rights and hinder their development into meaningful adults, and it is a source of the depletion of the State’s human resources.

Moreover, children are faced with situations such as exploitation, premature school dropout and engagement in hazardous work activities. To prevent these situations, the Legal Affairs Committee may need to collaborate with relative departments and organizations, working on enhancing public awareness of the basic knowledge of child labour and amending and enacting laws that align with international standards and norms; the National Action Plan for the Eradication of Child Labour in Myanmar is long term plan; it covers 15 years and is divided into three short term phases, each covering a duration of 5 years; currently, we are in the final phase of the first five-year plan (2019-2023) and preparing for the second five-year action plan (2024-2028); the drafting of the second five-year action plan (2024-2028) may be based on the first five-year action plan and continuing ongoing projects of the first five-year action plan; the Chairman encouraged the attendees to actively discuss the implementation of the action plan for the eradication of child labour as a national responsibility.

Then, the meeting minutes of the 5th Legal Affairs Committee Meeting were confirmed; U Kyaw Kyaw Naing, Secretary of the Legal Affairs Committee and Director General of the Legal Advice Department of the Ministry of Legal Affairs, presented the implementation status of the resolution of the 5th Legal Affairs Committee Meeting and discussed the drafting action plan for the second five-year period (2024-2028) for the eradication of child labour in Myanmar.

Afterward, the attendees discussed and provided suggestions on the eradication of child labour and the Secretary of the Committee obtained approval from the president to determine five facts during the 6th Committee Meeting.

Finally, Dr, Htain Lin Oo, the Deputy Minister and Deputy Attorney General of the Ministry of Legal Affairs, as well as the Chairman of the Working Committee on Legal Affairs for the Eradication of Child Labour in Myanmar, delivered the closing remarks and concluded the meeting.
