The Ministry of Legal Affairs and the China-ASEAN Research Centre held a bilateral meeting on legal cooperation and the legislative research project, which is to be implemented under the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Ministry of Legal Affairs and the China-ASEAN Research Centre, on February 11, 2025 at the meeting hall of the Ministry of Legal Affairs, The Union Minister and Attorney General of the Union H.E. Dr. Thida Oo, the Deputy Minister and Deputy Attorney General Dr. Htain Lin Oo, Directors General, Deputy Directors General, Directors of the Ministry of Legal Affairs and a delegation led by Dr. Zhong Jia of the China-ASEAN Research Centre attended the meeting.
At the meeting, the Union Minister and Attorney General of the Union H.E, Dr. Thida Oo addressed that the 75th Anniversary of the China-Myanmar relation would take place next year and expressed gladness to holding this meeting; the Ministry of Legal Affairs has enhanced the relationship with the China-ASEAN Legal Research Centre by signing the MOU between the Ministry of Legal Affairs and the China-ASEAN Legal Research Centre on legal cooperation and legislative research project on July 17, 2023; at that signing ceremony, the Union Minister and Attorney General of the Union H.E. Dr. Thida Oo was awarded the title of Honorable Professor by the Southwest University of Political Science and Law for the period of 2023 to 2028; Officers from the Ministry of Legal Affairs were sent to study at the Southwest University of Political Science and Law and all of them were accorded their degrees successfully; during the trip to China, the Union Minister and Attorney General of the Union met with Secretary General and Vice President Mr. Zhang Xiao Jun and representatives of the China-ASEAN Legal Research Centre and discussed to establish a legal cooperation committee and China-Myanmar Arbitration Centre; the Ministry of Legal Affairs is implementing the legal advocacy program in accordance with the 2020-2024 strategic plan titled ” Providing Legal Service for Justice”; therefore, the legal research program plays a vital role in the development of the legal sector by providing legal service and legal advice; if the Ministry of Legal Affairs and China-ASEAN Legal Research Centre perform legal cooperation and legislative research project, it can bring mutual benefits; the holding of bilateral meeting between the Ministry of Legal Affairs of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar and the China-ASEAN Legal Research Centre of the People’s Republic of the China, can implement the MOU on legal cooperation and legislative research projects while enhancing the bilateral relations between Myanmar and China.
The meeting also discussed the research topics related to the rule of law, the formation of research groups, the exchange of legislative process, the establishment of the China-Myanmar Legal Research Centre on research in combating cyber fraud, gambling, narcotic drugs and other transnational organized crimes, the establashment of the China-Myanmar Commercial Arbitration Centre, and to deliver a special lecture by the Union Minister and Union Attorney General H.E. Dr. Thida Oo at Southwest University of Political Science and Law (SWUL) as an Honorable Professor in 2025.
