The Chairperson of the Bar Council, the Un ion Attorney General U Tun Tun Oo, delivered a speech at the first meeting of the Bar Council holding through video conferencing at 9:30 a.m. this morning.
During the meeting, the Chairperson said that the meeting was the first time of the Bar Council after re-forming it under the law Amending of the Bar Council Act enacted by the Pyidaungsu Hluttaw on 10 June, 2019; under the Act, the new Bar Council is comprised of the Attorney General of the Union as the Chairperson, two judges of the Supreme Court of the Union and the Deputy Attorney General as members; 11 elected advocates as Vice-chairperson, secretary and members; rules and procedures were stipulated under the Act and the Bar Council election was held on 2 August, 2020; over 3,300 advocates across the country elected 11 advocates out of 110 candidates in the election; this first meeting is held within two months after the election under the rules; although the first in-person meeting is to be held, due to Covid 19, it is held through video conferencing with the elected advocates from relevant Regions and States; Advocate U Mya Thein and Advocate U Khin Maung Zaw are elected as the Vice-chairperson and secretary respectively by votes out of 11 elected advocates at this meeting; the Office of the Bar Council is located at Building No.6 in the compound of Wunna Theikdi Stadium, Nay Pyi Taw and its branch is located in lower block of Maha Bandoola Park Road, Yangon; the Bar Council shall securitize the personal information of applicants for admission of advocates and give confirmation to the Supreme Court of the Union , and reply to the Supreme Court of the Union when requested to give opinion regarding to take action against advocates for the ethical misconduct, after discussing it at the meeting; plans should be made for advocates to be experts in their relative subjects (e.g. Bankruptcy Lawyer, Intellectual Property Lawyer, Employment Lawyer, Corporate Lawyer, Tax Lawyer and Family Lawyer) in the new legal fields as the Bar Council shall provide the legal education opportunities, training and hold examinations under the Bar Council Act, and the Bar Council shall cooperate with courts, law offices and prosecution bodies in pursuing justice for rule of law, and take accountability for proper performances of advocates.
The matters such as the capacity building for advocates, ethics of advocates, advocate licences and registration of lawyer associations are discussed at the meeting and the meeting ended at 13:00 p.m.
