Holding Workshop on Report Preparation for National Level Universal Periodic Review (UPR)

The Workshop on Report Preparation for National Level Universal Periodic Review (UPR) was held by the Report Preparation Working Committee in coordination with Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in the Part Royal Hotel, Nay Pyi Taw at 9:00 a.m., today .

In the Workshop, H.E U Tun Tun Oo, the Union Attorney General, delivered the Opening Speech and he said that Universal Periodic Review ( UPR) is the process implemented under Resolution No. (65/251) of the United Nations General Assembly; National Level Committee was formed to implement 166 recommendations to be reported in UPR third cycle and the relevant ministries were assigned the tasks in 12 sectors; subsequently, the National Level Committee formed the UPR Report  Preparation Working Committee, the Paper Preparation Working  Committee  and  the  Organizational  Relations Committee; under the decisions of the National Level Committee meeting, preliminary meeting of the Report      Preparation Working  Committee  was held  on  28-5-2019  for      the preparation of a  National  Report;  under  decisions  of  such  meeting,  we coordinated with relevant departments to send data for report preparation and the departments sent data to the Report Preparation Working Committee; the Working  Committee  forwarded  the  data  to  the  Paper  Preparation  Working Committee; the Paper Preparation Working Committee compiled UPR  National Report (Zero Draft) based on the data and sent it to the Working Committee on 23-7-2019; we discussed about National Level Report (First Draft) at the second meeting of the Universal Periodic Review ( UPR) Report Preparation Working Committee held on 2-8-2019; second draft of the report has been improved based on the suggestions made in such meeting and additional data sent by the departments; In the second meeting of the UPR Report Preparation Working Committee, we decided to hold a workshop coordinating with CSOs in accordance with the decision made in the second meeting of the National Level Committee; today’s workshop  is, therefore,  held to submit  a  comprehensive  National Report to the UN; in today’s discussion, attendees will be divided into eight groups to discuss eight  areas of human rights; and the Union Attorney General urged the attendees to give   suggestions    for    Myanmar   to    receive   encouragement, understanding  and  support   internationally and for Myanmar’s  positive development achievement to be recognized .

Next, Ms. Dawn Del Rio, Deputy Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), said that the Report Preparation Working Committee holds this consultative workshop with CSOs for appending the comprehensive Myanmar human rights situation to the third UPR report; in today ‘s workshop, eight areas of human rights selected by the Paper Preparation Working Committee are very important and we believe that outcomes of today ‘s discussion will provide essential information for report compi lers.

In total 110 persons from the Report Preparation Working Committee, the Paper Preparation Working Committee, relevant Ministries, the Myanmar National Human Rights Commission and CSOs attended the Workshop and discussed the eight areas of Myanmar human rights progress and challenges and matters that should be continuously implemented, and gave suggestions about them. This Workshop concluded at 17:30 pm.
