H .E. U Tun Tun Oo, the Union Attorney General attended and addressed the Effective Prosecution Responses to Cases of Violence Against Women and Children Needs Assessment Workshop , jointly organized by the Union Attorney General’s Office and (UNODC), (UNICEF), (UNFPA ) under United Nations. The workshop was held at Mingalathiri Hotel, Nay Pyi Taw ‘s hotel zone this morning.
In his address, the Union Attorney General said the workshop was jointly organized by the Union Attorney General ‘s Office , UNODC, UNICEF and UNFPA, and is a needs assessment workshop for effective prosecution responses to cases of violence against women and children . Law officers conduct criminal cases on behalf of the State, and their expertise, integrity and living and working in accordance with the code of ethics for law officers are vital for the people and the State, and also important for the development of justice and the rule of law. At present, crimes and violence against women and children are increasing, and the framework of law on these crimes need to be complete and reliable, while penalties and punishment need to be effective. Myanmar is a party to the Convention on the Rights of the Children (CRC) and the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) . The Union Attorney General Office is cooperating for the establishment of laws that are complete and satisfactory in line with the international standard to protect the children and women . The forthcoming new laws will provide with extra rights and protection that are more effective than the present ones. Law officers are to follow up effectively on cases of violence against women and children. Following the address of the Union Attorney General, Officer in Charge of ‘UNODC Myanmar office Mrs . Marie Cauchois said that UNODC is cooperating with the Union Attorney General’s Office, and based on the outcome of the workshop, more projects that are beneficial t o the people can be conducted.
The Deputy Attorney General, officials from UNODC, UNFPA and UNICEF, Directors general, Directors, forty trainees and invited guests attended this meeting together with the Union Attorney General.
